Hi there!
Thank you for being here. It means you've been around for a while, and I hope it's not by chance. This is just the first post on this blog, but I assure you there will be more to come. I already have several interesting topics lined up about illustration, my workflow, and past projects.
Who am I?
My name is Asia Gwizdała, and I've lived in Tricity since birth. For the past few years, I've been immersed in illustration. It might sound ordinary, just another person who draws. But there's more to it. What adds flavor to the whole situation is that I recently turned 41, and illustration isn't my trained profession. It's primarily a passion that's been with me since elementary school, though I set it aside for many years to pursue a "career." Initially, I thought I'd be like Indiana Jones when I started studying history. I vividly remember the moment when I received my class schedule, complete with Latin. I thought to myself, I'm going to master a foreign language. The end of this story is that I didn't fall in love with Latin, didn't discover a lost treasure (after all, Indiana Jones was an archaeologist, not a historian), and my professional path led me to marketing, where I've been for years.
So why illustration?
I distinctly remember one of the books I had on my shelf. It was an English book about Christmas. It had carols, short Christmas stories, recipes for Christmas cookies, and creative gift wrapping ideas. Each part of the book was illustrated by a different artist, showcasing distinct styles. One of them left a lasting impression on me. The characters had charmingly oversized heads, rosy cheeks, and their hair and fur looked incredibly soft. Everything was drawn with a delicate touch. I often returned to those illustrations and marveled at how delicacy could be conveyed through drawing. Today, I regret not having that book anymore (though I occasionally search for it online and in antiquarian bookshops—wish me luck, I only remember the cover, not the author or title). But my fascination with book illustrations never left me, and a few years ago, I decided to revisit that idea and start illustrating digitally. I quickly discovered that illustrating is an amazing thing. It's a time when I can focus solely on this one activity. With each stroke of the stylus, something new appears just as I envision it. I have the power to create small imagined worlds and show the world through my eyes.
What techniques do I use for illustration?
My primary medium is digital illustration, and my best friends are my iPad and stylus. These tools allow me to create illustrations using various techniques that are perfect for websites, social media posts, as well as for printing invitations for special occasions, commemorative graphics, gifts, and much more. It opens up a whole range of possibilities. So if you need such graphics, you're in the right place.
Additionally, I've been exploring my love for watercolors and gouache for some time now. There's something magical about how successive layers of paint transform into an image and create a cohesive whole.
See you soon! :)
